MR BRAINWASH'S 2011 ART SHOW (PART 1)

One of the great things about working in the creative industries in L.A. is how much amazing art and inspiration we are surrounded by...there is ALWAYS something going on.  With that in mind the Junk Food art and merch department left work early (always great!!) to drive into Hollywood to catch Mr Brainwash's, otherwise known as L.A. based filmmaker and street artist Thierry Guetta, 2011 art show.  The show took over 80,000 sq. ft of an otherwise abandoned building on La Brea Blvd, and displayed five stories full of Mr Brainwash's original works for a limited time.

Mr Brainwash is a somewhat controversial figure in the art world.  The star of Banksy's "Exit through the Gift Shop" documentary/film, which followed MBW's pursuit of street artists work and eventual evolution into an 'artist' himself, MBW has been called a copy cat and even a Banksy stunt.  The jury is still out on that one but everyone definitely has their own idea or conspiracy theory about MBW's rise to fame in the art world.  Nevertheless, the show gains significant press interest and we were intrigued to see for ourselves.

The exhibition began before you even step foot in the door - the whole of the outside of the building has been covered in stencils and graffiti, including a huge Beatles mural, and it only served as a taster for what is inside.  Inside we found an exhibition space over run with art...it was pretty overwhelming! Not an inch of the interior has been spared...transfers, tags, artwork & stickers COVER the walls, windows and visible surfaces!  As if that wasn't incredible enough the actual exhibits were amazing, capturing references from all your favorite pop icons and nostalgic characters with paint and stencilling splashed all over it.  It was collage gone mad!?  As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a huge buffalo sculpture covered in collaged pop art images such as Micky Mouse and Obama dressed as Superman!? Miss Moss (my fave) also seemed to continually pop up in schizophrenic collage works.  There was a lot of recurring imagery and a real theme of art is love mixed with 20th century icons...

John and Yoko

Always great to see people out wearing Junk Food star wars tees!

With the amount of art around me it was hard not to get snap happy with my iPhone...so you know...i didn't hold back... ;)

To be continued tomorrow.....

I love the one with Ben Franklin wearing the headphones connected to an actual boombox. And the one with the kids spray painting "Never never give up." And the one with John & Yoko holding a sign saying "Art is Love." Hmm, I guess it's too difficult to choose just one - they're all so great!

It's hard to go wrong with a work of pop art that combines progressive politics and DC Comics. Super Obama FTW!

My favourite image is of the two children spray painting 'never never give up' I think this is such an impowering image and the message is one that in my eyes should be spread to the masses!
I personally believe that all children should be inspired to follow their dreams and never just settle for what they are given as they can always do better!
also its what my tattoo will say once it is done!

These are great photos. I especially love the one of the two people standing in front of (I think Bridget Bardot). She looks so sultry and the people look amused by it.

Mine is the "Never Never give up"
I find it very true about everything in life. I myself, am paralyzed. I have to live by that saying. I first hear something simular from the ESPY Jim Valano speach in 1993. He was dieing of cancer and went up to accept the life time achievement award. he game a great and inspiring speech. But at the end he said, "Don't give up, Don't ever give up."
